Recently I read something really helpful taken from Walter Elliott’s “The Spiritual Life.” He wrote: “Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after another.”
How important this is for Christians to realize. We often become experts too soon! We get a few rudimentary ideas of what we think Christianity is. And then we stop studying and learning—figuring we have enough for the entire journey!
The reality is that we must persevere through a series of short journeys, “short races,” each needing some new inspiration or understanding. As we read in Isaiah: “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (28:10).
Here a little and there a little, for the short races. That’s Christian perseverance.
