Mother Teresa on “accepting humiliations”

Mother Teresa offers this: “All that has been said about humility is not enough to teach you humility. All that you have read about humility is not enough to teach you humility. You learn humility only by accepting humiliations. And you will meet humiliation all through your life” (No Greater Love 6-7). The prodigal could easily have avoided making his admission. He could have chosen to save himself some of the humiliation, but he didn’t. The natural life will always lead us to selfish decisions that bring remorse and embarrassment. …The comfort comes with the yielding. When we let go and turn everything over to the Lord, the burdens of self-effort and self-dependence disappear. Then it is simply our hand in his, our life in his, and his spirit in us. “Blesses are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (from Power of Yielding, p. 136, 140)
