Eben Alexander writes:
“The (false) suspicion that we can somehow be separated from God is the root of every form of anxiety in the universe, and the cure for it—which I received partially within the Gateway and completely within the Core—was the knowledge that nothing can tear us from God, ever.” (Proof of Heaven 77)
I actually don’t disagree with this universalist idea that all are saved. But I think Alexander’s knowledge doesn’t reflect the whole picture. It doesn’t explain at all why God has put us where we are–in a limited, natural world of selfishness and isolation.
Two basic things that I see underlying Christianity are these: 1) that death is not it and 2) that how we live here matters.
A person who has the unbelievably wonderful opportunity of experiencing a NDE reaffirms #1. But only Christianity explains and makes #2 possible.
