God has been finding ways to communicate with His children since the first “living soul” awoke to individual consciousness. As George MacDonald wrote, “the God … who takes millions of years to form a soul that shall understand him and be blessed” is “ever uttering himself” (Philips, Discovering the Character of God 33)
It’s time we replace the expression “near death experience” with “life-beyond-the-brain experience.” Even some modern neuroscience research is starting to see consciousness as something separate from the brain. Eben Alexander, himself a neurosurgeon, wrote: “My experience showed me that the death of the body and the brain are not the end of consciousness, that human consciousness continues beyond the grave” (9).
And God is speaking here and there.
